Achieving Corporate Information Technology Excellence
In our Globalized world today where the physical borders among countries do not constitute social or economic barriers any more, the rules of business landscape are being redefined. Change is inevitable and it touches all aspects of our social and economical life. Competition has never been so evident and is no longer confined to commercial companies competing to attract consumers, it involves Governments and cities competing among themselves to attract investor or increase their market share of tourism, etc. That said, “Change” affects the way we do business, it is reflected on our strategies to achieve our mission and business objectives. The notion of customer satisfaction might not be important to a Government owned Telephone Services Organization until it is privatized. The focus on attracting and retaining customers, increasing profits rather than revenue constitutes a total change of mentality that has to start form the boardroom and echoes all the way to the worker at his/her desk. Developing strategies that deal with the forces of change is a necessity, communicating these strategies to the work force is as important as creating them. On the technology front, we are witnessing a myriad of disruptive technologies that affect our daily lives and in turn affect the way we do business. Our world before inventing the electric bulb is totally different than our world after, the same applies on technologies such as Internet and mobile telephones. These technologies represent a better and a cheaper way of doing things that open new possibilities, needs and expectations from our customers.

We at SMCI have realized that and developed what we call “Corporate IT excellence” business model aiming at helping our customer achieve IT excellence which in turn leads to Business excellence.
To achieve IT excellence the organization should have the following:
- A well defined strategy that answers to the forces of change and uses the corporate distinctive competencies to achieve the business objectives. The Corporate should have a mechanism to develop and communicate these strategies to the workforce on the appropriate decision making levels.
- As strategy is reflected on the way you do your business, the organization should have a well defined and communicated business process model. Focus on increasing revenue, opening new markets, increasing profits, achieving Citizen satisfaction, etc.. demand different ways of conducting business. Having your business model documented, well designed and optimized helps the organization to respond to the new strategies and achieve the required objectives.
- Having the organization business process well designed and modeled results in automating it with the least effort. Corporations spend a lot of money on acquiring departmental systems without considering the large picture where departmental systems are only elements of the overall picture
- The ability to choose the proper application or project is a major element of achieving corporate excellence. Your projects and applications are in fact investment decisions that have to be well chosen and executed.
- Project Management is a huge challenge in IT world today, the nature of IT projects is so unique which makes it a challenge to deliver your projects within the time/cost/quality constrains and achieve the business benefit intended.
- Data center deal with “data” while the corporate requires “information” to be able to take decisions. Transforming the corporate data into a valuable asset of Information contributes to better decision making. SMCI believes that having this information visible and accessible within the proper access mechanism is another major factor in achieving corporate IT excellence.
- Finally IT excellence can not be achieved with the proper competent human infrastructure that is achieved by attracting and retaining the proper resources and by having a resilient technological infrastructure. Resilience means having highly available , scalable, properly installed and maintained technology that drives all what we mentioned before towards achieving the organizational goals and objectives.
